Cow’s milk may increase risk of breast cancer

A new study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology has revealed that higher intakes of cow’s milk are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, and the World Cancer Research Fund.

The study followed 52,795 women who were part of the Adventist Health Study-2 cohort, and discovered that women who consumed 1/4 to 1/3 cup of cow’s milk per day had a 30% increased chance of breast cancer. One cup of cow’s milk per day increased the risk by 50%, and 2-3 cups were linked to an 80% increased chance of breast cancer.

When dairy milk was replaced with soy milk, there was a 32% reduced risk of breast cancer.

The study authors suggest caution with the current government recommendations to consume three glasses of cow’s milk per day.
