Today, I want to delve into a topic that resonates deeply with many of us – dementia. It’s a reality that nearly two-thirds of those living with Alzheimer’s disease are women. This can be a daunting statistic, but understanding why this is the case and what we can do to protect ourselves can empower us to take control of our health. Let’s explore the reasons behind this gender gap and discuss actionable strategies to safeguard our cognitive well-being.

Start by incorporating more plant-based meals into your weekly menu, focusing on colourful fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. These antioxidants combat oxidative stress, a major factor in cognitive decline.

2. Regular Exercise: Physical activity improves cardiovascular health, increases blood flow to the brain, and promotes the growth of new neurons. We need to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week, combined with muscle-strengthening activities. Activities such as walking, swimming, yoga, and dancing can be both enjoyable and beneficial.

Exercise is also a fantastic stress reliever and can boost your mood, further protecting your brain. Find activities you love, and make them a regular part of your routine. Whether it’s a brisk walk in nature or a fun dance class, staying active is crucial.

3. Cognitive Engagement: Keeping the brain active through learning, reading, puzzles, and social engagement can help maintain cognitive function. Lifelong learning and mental challenges stimulate the brain and build cognitive reserve. Engage in activities that challenge your mind, such as learning a new language, playing musical instruments, or participating in brain games and puzzles.

Social interactions are equally important. Regularly connect with friends and family, join clubs, or participate in community activities. Social engagement not only keeps the mind active but also provides emotional support, which is vital for overall well-being.

I feel that it is really helpful to understand when and how the medical community recognised that more women than men develop dementia as it adds an important layer to our discussion. The recognition of this gender disparity has evolved over several decades, with crucial milestones along the way:

  1. 1980s-1990s: During this period, epidemiological studies began to highlight a higher prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia in women compared to men. These studies were among the first to systematically analyse the incidence and prevalence of dementia across genders, bringing the gender disparity to light.
  2. 1990s: Organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health agencies started compiling more comprehensive data on dementia. This data further highlighted the gender differences, with reports consistently showing that women were more affected.

This oversight resulted in gaps in understanding how diseases specifically affect women. Dementia is no exception; the unique ways in which it impacts women might have been under-recognised due to this historical bias.
