How to Cyber-Fast for Health, Happiness, and Creativity
In today’s fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded with technology. From smartphones to laptops, tablets to smartwatches, it seems we are perpetually connected. This “always switched on 24/7” society can have detrimental effects on our health and well-being.
As a natural health writer and dedicated researcher who is prone to self-experimentation, I believe in the power of cyber-fasting – taking deliberate breaks from digital devices – to restore balance and harmony in our lives. In fact, I managed to take a whole week away from my devices on a recent trip to the USA! I explained to my team in the office that I was not to be contacted unless it was a genuinely dire emergency and as my devices were off, I gave them my partner’s contact details.
I found that this short break away from technology provided extraordinary results. I felt happier and more relaxed than I had for a long time (this year has been rather stressful with the launch of a new Complementary Medical Association website – which has turned out brilliantly – but I had to do 16-18 hour days to get a lot of the content over. As you know, this flies in the face of every health recommendation I make (over long hours, sedentary lifestyle, staring at a screen to name a few!) but, sometimes life just takes a wonky turn, doesn’t it.
I believe that as long as we have enough basic resilience to cope with these occasional stressors, we will bounce back – and the cyber-fast I took was instrumental in that! So, as I have been reading up on this phenomenon – and experienced it myself – I wanted to share it with you. (And, by the way, I’m now insisting that my wonderful team members all take a fully-paid cyber-fast week every year from now on – no screens and no work!).
The Dangers of Overuse: Technology, Screens, and Social Media
The overuse of technology and screens can lead to myriad health issues. Prolonged exposure to blue light emitted by screens can cause digital eyestrain, leading to symptoms such as headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes. Blue light can also interfere with our circadian rhythms, disrupting sleep patterns and leading to insomnia.
Social media, while a powerful tool for connection, can also be a source of stress and anxiety. The constant comparison to others, the pressure to present a perfect life, and the never-ending stream of information can be overwhelming. Research has shown that excessive use of social media can lead to feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety.
The Benefits of Cyber-Fasting
Cyber-fasting offers a multitude of benefits for our physical, mental, and emotional health. By taking regular breaks from screens and social media, we can reduce digital eyestrain, improve our sleep, and lower stress levels. Cyber-fasting allows us to reconnect with the present moment, fostering mindfulness and enhancing our overall well-being.
Improved Sleep
One of the most immediate benefits of cyber-fasting is improved sleep. Reducing exposure to blue light in the evening helps regulate our circadian rhythms, promoting better sleep quality. A good night’s sleep is essential for our overall health, boosting our immune system, improving cognitive function, and enhancing our mood.
Enhanced Mental Clarity
Stepping away from the constant influx of information allows our minds to rest and rejuvenate. This can lead to enhanced mental clarity, better focus, and increased productivity. Cyber-fasting provides an opportunity to engage in deep thinking, creativity, and problem-solving without the distractions of notifications and alerts.
Reduced Stress and Anxiety
Social media can be a significant source of stress and anxiety. By taking a break from these platforms, we can reduce the pressure to constantly compare ourselves to others and escape the relentless cycle of news and updates. Cyber-fasting promotes a sense of calm and peace, allowing us to focus on what truly matters in our lives.
How to Start Cyber-Fasting
Embarking on a cyber-fast can be a transformative experience. Here are some practical steps to get started:
1. Set Clear Boundaries: Decide on specific times during the day when you will disconnect from all digital devices. This could be an hour in the morning and evening, or a full day each week.
2. Create Tech-Free Zones: Designate certain areas in your home as tech-free zones. This could be the dining room, bedroom, or a cosy reading nook. Use these spaces to engage in screen-free activities such as reading, journaling, or spending quality time with loved ones.
3. Establish a Bedtime Routine: Implement a digital curfew at least an hour before bed. Use this time to unwind with calming activities such as a warm bath, meditation, or gentle stretching.
4. Plan Offline Activities: Schedule regular offline activities that bring you joy and fulfilment. This could include hobbies such as painting, gardening, or cooking. Engage in physical activities like walking, yoga, or dancing to reconnect with your body and mind.
Supporting Family Members in Cyber-Fasting
Encouraging family members to join you in a cyber-fast can be challenging, especially with youngsters who are accustomed to being constantly connected. Here are some tips to support your family in this endeavour:
1. Lead by Example: Show your family the benefits of cyber-fasting by practising it yourself. Share your positive experiences and the improvements you notice in your well-being.
2. Communicate Openly: Discuss the reasons for cyber-fasting with your family. Explain the health benefits and the importance of taking breaks from screens. Encourage open dialogue and address any concerns they may have.
3. Set Realistic Goals: Start with achievable goals, such as a tech-free hour during dinner or a device-free day on weekends. Gradually increase the duration and frequency of the cyber-fast as your family becomes more comfortable with the practice.
4. Plan Family Activities: Organise screen-free family activities that everyone can enjoy. This could include board games, outdoor adventures, or cooking meals together. Creating positive, shared experiences will make the cyber-fast more enjoyable for everyone.
5. Provide Alternatives: Offer alternative activities to replace screen time. Encourage reading, puzzles, or creative projects. Introduce hobbies and interests that can be pursued without the use of technology.
My final thoughts

As you embark on this journey, remember to be patient with yourself and your family. Change takes time, and it’s important to approach cyber-fasting with a positive and open mindset. Embrace the benefits of disconnecting and rediscover the joy of living in the present moment.
