What is inflammaging?
Inflammaging is a term used to describe persistent, low-level, “sterile” inflammation that develops with ageing (sterile meaning it’s not caused by an acute infection like flu or a wound that needs healing). It’s not the same as the normal, short-term inflammation you need to recover from an injury. This is the slow-burning, background type that can quietly reshape tissues over time.
Researchers have linked inflammaging with increased risk of multiple age-related diseases, disability, frailty and earlier mortality.
Important nuance: inflammation itself is not “bad”. It’s a protective response that helps you heal. The issue is when inflammation becomes chronic, poorly regulated, and persistent.
